Igor Szczerbakow

(*1955)

Composer and pedagogue. His works touch upon spiritual themes, describing the clash of human dramas with eternity. Szczerbakow’s music had been devoted to religious and metaphysical themes even before the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Equally important to Szczerbakow is the past and present Ukraine, clearly pronounced in his music which blends the great Romantic tradition with the echoes of Soviet neoclassicism and traditional music of Ukraine. Despite their diversity, such diverse styles are finely integrated within a language of cluster harmonies and chordal ostinatos. (KS)
