Agata Zubel

(*1978)

Composer, singer and pedagogue. The expressive scale of her pieces is as extensive as her vocal capacity and ranges from whispers to screams, from short, ragged motifs to frenetic culminations. The near-primeval energy of her pieces is bound to the specific role of the percussion and the human  voice, i.e. the oldest known musical instruments. Zubel exposes the rhythmic aspect of her works to additionally strengthen their expressive potential. Still,  she keeps even the most obsessive rhythms and the most fantastic timbres in check, embedding them within legible, processual forms. (KS)
