Artur Zagajewski

(*1978)

Composer and pedagogue. A rebellious spirit of Polish contemporary music, Zagajewski escapes any classifications. On the one hand, his music includes complex, micro-counterpoint structures permeated with high harmonics, while on the other his tones are brutally coarse and possess regular, chunky rhythmic. Zagajewski makes instruments using hydraulic PVC pipes, experiments with graphical notation, composes quasi-happening pieces to engage amateur musicians, random passers-by and the public space. All of the above is not devoid of a sense of humour and paratheatrical gestures elevating banality to the rank of art. (KS)
